Itumeleng Khune looks set to stay at Kaizer Chiefs beyond the current season despite media reports suggesting he could either be offloaded or move abroad.

According to a source privy to Khune’s situation, who has requested to remain anonymous, the 33-year-old goalkeeper has an option on his current deal with Chiefs.

However, that option can only be triggered by the Chiefs management provided they are satisfied with Khune’s contribution this season.

“The reason everyone has been relaxed about Khune’s future is that the club has an option to renew on his current deal,” the source told TheSouthAfrica.com.

“Whether he leaves or stays, it will be up to Chiefs to decide at the end of the season.

“However, if he leaves for any team, he won’t leave for free,” concluded the source.

Khune has already done so much for Amakhosi this season having played a pivotal role in the team reaching the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.

And while his performance was shaky at the start of the season and he hasn’t done as well as the majority of Chiefs fans had expected, Khune remains one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

Khune has featured 14 times under Gavin Hunt this season, and the Amakhosi mentor hasn’t stopped raving about the goalkeeper’s performances, ability, and experience in the matches he has played.
