Leremi passed away in a horrific car accident exactly 14 years ago, and at the time, he was on the books of Sundowns.

And remembering him in an interview with Phakaaathi was his best friend, Gerald Modabi, who played with Leremi at Pirates.

According to Modabi, the then 22-year-old Leremi would have ended up in Europe because of how talented he was.

But perhaps Leremi’s death came too soon as Modabi revealed that the midfielder was in talks with the Portuguese team two weeks before his death.

And to show that their friendship was genuine, Modabi revealed that the said Portuguese team would sometimes call him whenever they couldn’t get hold of Leremi.

Furthermore, Modabi is certain that Leremi would have been a household name in Europe just like Benni McCarthy.

“He [Leremi] would have probably ended up in Europe, maybe in Spain because he loved Spain,” said Modabi.

“I think two weeks prior to his death he was in talks with a team in Portugal, but every time they tried calling him they couldn’t get hold of him,” he explained.

“They would end up calling me looking for him but, he would have definitely ended up being a big international star like Benni McCarthy,” added Modabi.
