Former Kaizer Chiefs star Njabulo Blom is bossing it in the MLS. Which other South African PSL stars are stateside, and who’s joining them?

Bongokuhle Hlongwane

The 23-year-old Minnesota United forward has bagged three goals in 11 MLS appearances this term, and the former Maritzburg star is a key player for the team under coach Adrian Heath. This is good news for Bafana Bafana and the player of course.

Njabulo Blom

Kaizer Chiefs saw a talented academy star leave the club at the end of 2022, and he’s thriving for St Louis City. Blom was initially in and out of the side, but his influence is growing at the base of their midfield and he’s one of the first names on the team sheet. At 24, he’s also entering his prime.

Katlego Ntsabaleng

The 26-year-old Benoni-born star, known as “Tsiki”, is at Dallas FC and excelling in a wide midfield role.

Olwethu Makhanya

The 20-year-old central defender is on the books of the Philadelphia Union. He made the move from Stellenbosch in July 2023.

Cassius Mailula

Once a prolific striker with Mamelodi Sundowns after forming a wonderful strike partnership with Peter Shalulile, Mailula earned his move stateside. After a slow start with Toronto FC, the 22-year-old is flourishing, scoring a critical decider in a Canadian Championship QF clash last term.

Jomo Sono, an Mzansi great, was a pioneering presence as far as South Africans in the USA are concerned. Historically, the MLS has been rather kind to South African stars and been home to some of Mzansi’s finest ever footballers. Let’s take a little stroll down memory lane, because there are some SERIOUSLY legendary names in this roll of honour. That includes Doctor Khumalo of Kaizer Chiefs.

  • Doctor Khumalo (Columbus Crew)
  • Jomo Sono (NY Cosmos, Colorado Caribous, Atlanta Chiefs, Toronto Blizzard)
  • Kaizer Motaung (Atlanta Chiefs)
