After completing his debut season with Mamelodi Sundowns, DStv Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season Ronwen Williams has reflected on his journey.

The Gqeberha-born stopper, Williams joined Sundowns from SuperSport United at the beginning of the previous campaign and was a vital cog for the Chloorkop giants.

Williams also conceded that his move to join coach Rulani Mokwena’s side has definitely elevated his game and status in the domestic and international scene.

While his move was criticised by some in the football fraternity considering that Sundowns has Denis Onyango, Reyaad Pieterse, and Kennedy Mweene, Williams proved his critics wrong.

Having spent 18 years with Matsatsantsa, the 31-year-old Williams became Sundowns’ number one in the most recent season and also cemented his position as Bafana skipper.

In his maiden campaign with Sundowns, Williams proved himself as one of the most trusted players for Masandawana as he managed to keep 18 clean sheets and scooped his first league title.

On top of that, he also broke the record previously held by former Bafana and Orlando Pirates net minder Moeneeb Josephs who set the record for most clean sheets in the South African top flight.

“It’s been an amazing season for me, but it’s all down to hard work, perseverance and not giving up you know,” Williams reacted to his Goalkeeper of the Season Award per iDiski Times.

“Obviously coming on board, I couldn’t waste time I had to kick on from the start, from the minute I got here and the ability to learn and gel with the team, and take in information was highly important.

“They make it easy for me, I play with wonderful players, top talents, some of the best on the continent, and the technical team makes it easy for me too, they give the information that one needs to go and win the game, credit to them for the amazing work they’ve done.”

WILLIAMS LOOKING TO IMPROVE HIS GAME AT SUNDOWNS

Despite showing good signs of development under Mokwena where Williams was also handed the captain’s armband, he admits there’s room for improvement.

In most of their games, Williams played as a sweeper keeper and seriously impressed the technical team and the Kaboyellow family.

“Definitely, I felt I could improve, like I said before I’ve always watched Sundowns with keen interest when I was on the other side at SuperSport United,” Williams added.

“They played amazing football and you could see…having played with Denis before, Reyaad, and seeing how their game evolved, that’s what I was chasing.

“Yes I was doing well, I was doing okay but I wanted to do better, be even greater and I knew coming here was a challenge I was looking forward to. Rubbing shoulders with the best you have to improve.”
