Over the years, Kaizer Chiefs have been known as the cup kings of South African football, despite frequently changing coaches. However, their fortunes took a downturn after the departure of Stuart Baxter in the 2014/15 season.

Since then, the team has struggled to win any trophies, losing five cup finals in a row. Baxter’s initial tenure with Kaizer Chiefs was successful, with the team winning two league titles, the Nedbank Cup, and the MTN8 trophies. However, his abrupt departure in 2015 shocked fans. The 2014/15 team, helmed by Baxter, included at least eight Bafana Bafana players.

Eight coaches were appointed at Kaizer Chiefs after 2015 but none of them had won any silverware.

Steve Komphela

After Baxter’s departure, Komphela took over as head coach and was a fan favourite. Despite reaching two finals in his first season and finishing fifth in the league, his leadership failed to inspire confidence. His second season had the club showed little progress and he eventually resigned in 2018 after three years without winning any silverware.

Giovanni Solinas

Komphela’s departure saw the appointment of Giovanni Solinas. Kaizer Chiefs are known for ignoring local coaches and it was no surprise when they replaced Steve with the Italian coach. Solinas lasted only six months before being replaced by Ernst Middendorp.

Ernst Middendorp

When ‘Mazinyo’ took over, Amakhosi was a mess but the German steadied the ship somewhat. Under his leadership, the team showed improvement in the 2019/20 season, bolstered by key signings such as Samir Nurkovic. However, despite initially leading the league by 13 points, the team ultimately lost the title. A few days later, Middendorp was sacked and replace with a local coach.

Gavin Hunt

Khosi fans called for Hunt for years and finally, their prayers were answered when the former SuperSport United coach replaced Middendorp. The former Hellenic defender struggled during his stint and was fired before the season even ended. To his credit, he guided the Kaizer Chiefs to the CAF semifinals for the first time in their history.

Stuart Baxter

Following Hunt’s departure, the club brought back Stuart Baxter. He led the team to their first CAF Champions League final, which they lost to Al Ahly. Despite this achievement, Baxter’s contract was terminated in 2021. His second stint was a failure and fans wanted nothing to do with him.

Arthur Zwane

Kaizer Chiefs recruited one of their own in Zwane and he became the third local coach the club appointed in less than seven years. The former Bafana Bafana winger did a decent job with the squad he had but fans demanded a better coach. ‘10111’ was demoted end of the 2022/23 season.

Molefi Ntseki

Many football lovers were shocked when Kaizer Chiefs appointed Ntseki as coach last year. The former Bafana Bafana coach only lasted four months before he was given the boot. He lost six of his 11 games in charge at the club.

Cavin Johnson

Like Ntseki, Johnson was called from the youth structures to assist with the first team, Despite a positive start, the wheels eventually came off and Kaizer Chiefs finished 10th in the DStv Premiership this past season.
