Rhulani Mokwena began his reign as sole head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns in the best possible fashion when his side thrashed Maritzburg United in their DStv Premiership clash on Tuesday evening.

Masandawana ran out 5-0 winners in a match which was delayed by an hour due to adverse weather conditions at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Mamelodi Sundowns extended their log lead

Midfielders Haashim Domingo (26th and 57th minutes) and Cassius Mailula (45th and 76th minutes) both scored braces for Mamelodi Sundowns with defender Thapelo Morena (29th minute) chipping in with the fifth goal.

With their win, Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead atop the DStv Premiership log to three points over Richards Bay – and they also have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Maritzburg United stayed in 14th place.

In the night’s other matches, Royal AM beat Golden Arrows 3-1, while Cape Town City FC came from behind to beat Chippa United 2-1.
