Maritzburg United vs Sekhukhune FC: Match preview

Both Maritzburg United and Sekhukhune FC suffered opening day defeats and will be looking to get on the board in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday afternoon.

Team of Choice mentor Ernst Middendorp felt his side had the better game in their opener against Golden Arrows, despite their 2-1 defeat in the derby.

“We had a lot of possibilities in the first half [against Arrows]. In the moment, of course, to come back from two down [is difficult] but we fought hard,” said Middendorp.

“To lose after dominating is difficult but we will get better.”

Sekhukhune United head coach MacDonald Makhubedu had similar feelings about his side’s start to life in the DStv Premiership.

“It is a lesson, we will take it to the next game. I am happy, we were good on the day but the scoreline is very disappointing,” said Makhubedu. “We wanted to do better, we wanted to win, but we will try our best in the next game.

“The boys performed well against a good team. From the word go we were on top, created chances but it was not our day. If we can take the same performance into our next game I think we might get a result.”

Sekhukhune have considerably altered their squad from the group that won promotion, but their game is still dependant on midfielder Yusuf Maart.

Maritzburg United need to settle in a whole bunch of new boys as well, although one of them, in Alfred Ndengane impressed in his debut last weekend.

The only previous meeting between the two sides came in last season’s Nedbank Cup with Maritzburg United winning 2-1.
