The smart money suggests Mamelodi Sundowns will win a fifth consecutive – and 12th overall – title, but who will prove to be their biggest rivals next season?

Leading South African bookmakers Hollywoodbets have predictably installed Mamelodi Sundowns as 12/10 favourites to hold onto their title.

But it’s the teams that follow in the odds that may surprise some.

Kaizer Chiefs, with a new coach, a bunch of new players and coming off a woeful season in which they struggled to an eighth-place finish, are next best at 4/1.

Orlando Pirates, who finished third last season, are on offer at 5/1 to be crowned champions for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

Their biggest immediate headache is appointing a new coach after Josef Zinnbauer’s shock resignation earlier in the week.

Last season’s runners-up, Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu, could find the going a lot tougher this time around and are fourth-favourites at 12/1, while SuperSport United can be backed at 16/1 and Golden Arrows at 18/1.

The battle to avoid relegation promises to be a fierce one this season with Hollywoodbets not able to separate FIVE teams likely to be scraping at the bottom in the standings, namely Baroka FC, Chippa United, Stellenbosch FC, Marumo Gallants and newly promoted Sekhukhune United FC.

The 2021/22 DStv Premiership season will kick off on Friday, 20 August.
