Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has not been having a smooth sailing first season at Amakhosi, with the latest reports that he could be the subject of interest to other sides compounding his misery.

Gavin Hunt is currently preparing his Chiefs side for a CAF quarter-final

As Chiefs prepare for their home leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-final against Tanzanian giants Simba SC, it seems like the team will do well to concentrate on, on-field matters and block out media speculation. Hunt, himself has and will undoubtedly endure more mental toughness, testing periods from here until the conclusion of this season.

He still cannot escape speculation about his job security

That is partly due to the increasing intensity in the rumours that Hunt, will not be at Chiefs beyond this season. Reports that the veteran mentor has fallen out with Chiefs management due to the clubs’ results, as well as the two parties being at loggerheads with regards to potential transfer targets. With regards to the transfers, the first bone of contention came with Chiefs owner Kaizer Motaung senior not being fully comfortable with the pursuit of veteran Swallows FC forward Ruzaigh Gamildien.

Hunt is not happy with the Chiefs squad quality

Hunt also made no secret of his displeasure with the lack of quality at Chiefs, reportedly even going as far as telling the club management that he wanted a complete squad overhaul which included as many as 15 players leaving Naturena. Again! It was the club owner Motaung senior who came out on the radio to state that, such an overhaul would be unrealistic, in another show of clear differences in directions.

He is at loggerheads with club management

The most recent incident seems to have been the one that involves one of Hunt’s most trusted lieutenants at former club Bidvest Wits Buhle Mkhwanazi. Hunt is reportedly very interested in bringing the Bafana Bafana international to Chiefs, but club management appear unconvinced that he would be worth his salary demands, especially having not been active this season.

That might of proven to be the last straw for 56-year-old Hunt at Chiefs, with his disgruntlement being closely monitored by other clubs in the league according to a source known to The Citizen.

Has options if he leaves Chiefs

“He will not be short of suitors for obvious reasons. He has a proven record, and we all know part of the reasons he is struggling at Chiefs is because of the tired players he found there.

“If you look at the Chiefs squad, most players are over 30 and all they want now is a comfortable retirement, they don’t have any big ambitions anymore. But now he is not being given the players he wants, instead, he is getting suggestions on who he could bring on,” said a source.

The Citizen themselves claim to have it on good authority that, the likes of Stellenbosch FC, former club Supersport United and Cape Town City are potential suitors to Hunt.
