With Teboho Mokoena set to move to Mamelodi Sundowns for an eye-watering fee, one agent feels that the club paid too much for the Bafana midfielder.

Sundowns are believed to have tabled an enormous offer in order to ward off European suitors for the emerging star.

According to the unnamed agent, Sundowns have hampered the progress of Mokoena’s career as he should have taken the opportunity to move to Europe.

No player in the PSL worth R20 million

The agent insists that there isn’t a player in the Premier Soccer League that could legitimately warrant such a massive fee.

Big money deals are rare in South African football with most clubs looking to control their spending, to ensure they don’t drift into financial purgatory.

“If any team is prepared to pay that for any player, I don’t understand why he is not overseas. I think Mokoena is good enough to play in Europe and that should (have been) his first option. I know it might be in SuperSport’s best interests to get R20 or R25 million, but I think for the player, he he really needs to go to Europe,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

“In my opinion, I don’t think any player is worth that money in the PSL. I can’t remeber what (Peter) Shalulile was bought for, but I think it was around R10 to R12 million. You see how well he is doing right now, so it’s difficult to put a monetary amount on the best player in South Africa.”

Mamelodi Sundowns have not released the details of the fee paid for Mokoena and SuperSport United are also unlikely to spill the beans.
