Cardoso has been ever-present for the Amakhosi this season, missing just two of the club’s 35 fixtures in all competitions this campaign.

The Glamour Boys find themselves down in ninth position in the standings, a far cry from their second-place finish last season.

Key to their struggles has been the fact they have been leaking goals.

In 21 DStv Premiership matches to date, Kaizer Chiefs have conceded 24 goals while only scoring 22.

And Daniel Cardoso admits he has been far from his best.

“Individually, it hasn’t been the best of seasons as you can see – we’ve been leaking way too many goals, so I do take ownership of that,” said the 32-year-old Johannesburg-born central defender according to Kickoff.

“I know it’s a team sport but you need to lead from the back sometimes, and I think I’ve lacked that quite a bit this season.

“Also, helping the youngsters out takes a lot out of you as an individual, but I will get back to that form and you can see we are doing much better [of late]. I do think I have a lot more to give to the team, I just need to focus more on my own performances.”

Kaizer Chiefs will next be in action against Cape Town City in the FNB Stadium on Wednesday, 21 April.
