As reported by SABC Sport last month, SAFPU Vice-President Tebogo Munyai confirmed that reports of TS Galaxy failing to recently pay some of its players’ salaries has now reached their office.

At a time when at least six players are said to have gone without a salary for the past two months, there has been blatant expenditure in other areas, such as a trip to Turkey where friendly matches were played, while there was the purchase of the status for a women’s team in the Super League.

Time Sukazi has sought to downplay the alleged issue, but it’s since come to light that a meeting on Wednesday was held with team manager – Njabulo Sukazi – who is the daughter of the chairman, and coach Sead Ramovic.

Tim Sukazi was not present as players sought answers.

However, attempts were made to the defuse the situation, with Njabulo stating: “The reason why they (Tim Sukazi and club bosses) are not here today to come address you, it’ not that they don’t find it important. But they want to receive these funds to help you by today. I know they have been saying they will help since last month. It’s not easy to raise R1-million just like that, but they are trying. It’s not like they want you to not feed your families,” the team manager added.

Meanwhile, besides confirming this matter is being looked into, Munyai also previously stated that there was an issue of this nature that arose last year over a period of two months.

“This is not the first time, a lot of you do not know this but about four or five months ago, TS Galaxy didn’t pay players for two months. We are really worried about the non-payment of players, especially in the professional ranks,” he said.

“It’s not only TS Galaxy. National First Division is worse, just yesterday I was engaging with one of the club owners regarding a similar issue. As a union we’ve taken a step further to invite club owners to our offices to find out what the issues are, why players are not getting paid while the league is paying the grant. We want to get to the bottom of it,” he added.

TS Galaxy are currently eighth on the DStv Premiership log, having managed just five wins this season.

This sort of story facing TS Galaxy is not unheard of in the PSL recently

In the middle of last year, reports suggested Swallows players were refusing to partake in first-team training sessions as a result of ongoing issues with salary payments.

“Players are not receiving their salaries at Swallows which is something that has been happening since November last year,” South African Football Players Union deputy secretary-general Calvin Motloung said at that time.

“We did attend to that in the interest of the players, where we had a meeting with the club management with regards to the unpaid salaries. But the players suggested we give the club enough time, that was after the club promised to pay them. So now, there are players that have not been paid since December last year.”

Eventually the issue was resolved despite the ongoing financial struggles at Swallows.
