Njabulo Ngcobo has struggled for game time at Kaizer Chiefs, so could he make a sensational return to Swallows FC?

Reports have emerged of Swallows being interested in the services of Ngcobo, despite having sold him to Chiefs just two months ago.

The move to Chiefs from Swallows has proven to be far from what Ngcobo would’ve dreamed of so far, however. The Bafana Bafana international has spent most of the season thus far, on the bench watching on as the likes of Daniel Cardoso and Eric Mathoho have continued to earn the trust of coach Stuart Baxter.

As the majority of Amakhosi supporters have called for the end of the Cardoso-Mathoho centre back partnership, Ngcobo has often been pictured looking very frustrated on the Chiefs bench, watching on from the sidelines as the side has suffered from equally frustrating results this season. What would compound those feelings of frustration even further would for him is that both he and Swallows turned down an offer from Mamelodi Sundowns for his services.

Chiefs were involved in a two-way battle with Sundowns for the services of Ngcobo, in one of the transfer saga’s that dominated the previous transfer windows. Eventually it was the Glamour Boys who emerged victorious there and it was later revealed by Swallows chairman David Mogashoa that the two teams have a transfer agreement, plus Ngcobo already had agreed personal terms with the Soweto giants in January.

Could Swallows sign Ngcobo back?

However, it seems like Swallows could be looking to use that transfer agreement to their favour this time with a The Citizen source claiming the Birds are mulling over the possibility of talking to Chiefs about a sensational return of Ngcobo, since the club continue to leak goals after the DStv Premiership Defender of the Year departed.

Source discusses the possibility

“Swallows have a problem at the back because they didn’t get anyone to fill the gap left by Njabulo. Now when you look at the market, there is not much they can get so they are scraping around trying to find a solid defender. I have heard that they have discussed the possibility of speaking to Chiefs about getting Njabulo on loan in January if he is not the coach’s plans for this season.” Said the source.

“They feel he (Ngcobo) could be of great help to them in stopping (Swallows) the sieve they have become at the back,” the source concluded.

Could it really happen?

The move could prove unlikely , however, as Baxter has always spoken about the player being eased into things at Chiefs rather than being frozen out. Ngcobo even starred in a defensive midfield position in Amakhosi’s controversial 1-1 draw with Amazulu on Saturday, which suggested that he may have a future in a different role at the club.
