Chippa United chairperson Chippa Mpengesi has revealed the reason he took the coaching job away from the club’s former interim coach Kurt Lentjies.

While he was still an active Chilli Boys player last season, Lentjies was given the task of leading the club following the sacking of Gavin Hunt.

Cape Town-born Lentjies helped Chippa United survive relegation and many were surprised when he wasn’t appointed head coach.

Mpengesi, who was speaking to Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide, said Lentjies didn’t want the club to appoint an experienced assistant coach.

‘I’M LOOKING AT ASSISTING HIM’ – MPENGESI ON LENTJIES

“The only reason I let Kurt Lentjies stop coaching Chippa United is the fact that he didn’t want us as a club to recommend any assistant coach to work with him,” he said.

“Either experienced assistant coach or co-coach as a club we saw the need.

“So if then now as a chairman you are not willing to take my advices that I engage you on. It’s not like I’m imposing, I sit down with you, I give you my reasoning why I want to do that and then you don’t want to do that.

“I’m not sure whether maybe for me I must be a nice person, I must just not act and allow the man to what he wants.”

Mpengesi added that he had already suggested Allan Freese and Daine Klate, but Lentjies didn’t see that as a good idea.

“I wanted to bring Allan Freese to be his assistant so that he can guide him. Freese is an experienced old man who does not hold any ambitions of taking his job.

“But I also suggested the same Daine Klate, he didn’t want anyone.”

Lentjies is still under contract with the Eastern Cape side as a player and it appears the club has offered him a job in its technical team.

The ball is now in his court if he joins Klate on the touchline or rejects the job.

“At the moment he’s got a choice, he doesn’t want to be a player because he pronounced retiring.

“Having said that, he still have his contract as a player ending at the end of the season. So he has to be doing something, I don’t think the coach Daine Klate he has him in his plans as a player.

“I’m looking at assisting him because it is my duty. He made a mistake, I’m hoping now he has realized that. If he’s humble enough to accept that, then I’ll deploy him.”
