Chiefs secure star signing – what we know so far!

At the second time of asking, Chiefs have clinched the services of a sought-after target for next season. So, who has said what, so far?

After ongoing links between Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City star Mduduzi Mdantsane, it’s reported that Amakhosi have agreed transfer terms in principle.

Although the last move for Mdantsane fell short after a transfer fee was unable to be agreed upon in time, SABC Sport reports that progress has now been made to ensure a deal can be ironed out within the next few weeks.

Chiefs could make an announcement in the near future

So what do we know so far?

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis is in no rush to concede they’ve lost a key player, but this may just be a tactic to avoid disrupting the rest of the season.

Comitis had previously said that after opting to exercise the one-year option in his contract, they would look at securing his services in the long-term.

“I have spoken about Mdu in the past and yes we had a conversation with Chiefs in December, they had their chance and didn’t take it,” Comitis still told SABC Sport on Wednesday. “The guy still has one more year with us beyond the current season and until such time that something changes I cannot keep talking about Mdu again. He must still play the remainder of the season.”

Why would Chiefs want Mdantsane?

It’s an open secret that Amakhosi are set to make some crucial squad changes ahead of next season, with several players on their way out of Naturena.

Mdantsane, who is still only 28 years old, would be a wonderful boost to the Chiefs’ midfield ranks – even if he will come at a cost.

It will be very interesting to see what the details of the contract could be, with personal terms expected to be ironed out in the coming weeks, but it’s been clear for several months that Chiefs have always viewed the playmaker as a priority target.

Chiefs apparently missed out on the signing in January due to time constraints in negotiating a transfer fee.

City head coach Eric Tinkler recently suggested the club had virtually accepted they would be losing the talented player during the last transfer window, until the deal unexpectedly fell through.

“The little that I know, it was very, very close, it was literally last minute that Kaizer Chiefs opted not to go through with the deal,” Tinkler told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

Yet, there were increasing whispers that Amakhosi had once again reignited interest in the midfielder, with that sort of recent talk continuing to grow louder and louder until it’s now come to fruition.
