Coach Pitso Mosimane has looked to bolster his squad which lifted the CAF Champions League trophy, but lost their Egyptian Premier League title to bitter rivals Zamalek in recent weeks.

Al Ahly have signed no fewer than FIVE players while also recalling TWO players from loan spells.

Besides Percy Tau, Luis Miquissone, Moustafa El Badry, Karim Fouad and Hossam Hassan have all been lured to Cairo, while Amar Hamdy and Ahmed Abdelkader have returned from loan spells.

Following a week-long break, the Al Ahly squad had their first training session on Wednesday this week where the new players were introduced to their team-mates

However, there was no sign of Mosimane’s right-hand man Cavin Johnson who – as reported by The South African website – is believed to have resigned from his role.

According to Soccer Laduma, Johnson opted to remain in South Africa during the break and has not returned to Egypt with the rest of the South African contingent amid continued speculation that he has attracted interest from a DStv Premiership club.

No prizes for guessing that that club is currently coach-less Orlando Pirates!

Al Ahly will next be in action in the final of the Egypt Super Cup against El-Gaish on Tuesday, 21 September.

The new Egyptian Premier League season is set to kick off on Monday, 25 October.

The 62-year-old Johnson has an abundance of experience having served as head coach at a number of clubs in Mzansi, namely Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards.

Although there has been no official confirmation from Al Ahly regarding his departure from the club, clarity is expected in the coming days.

The Buccaneers are without a permanent coach at present following the sensational departure of Josef Zinnbauer on the eve of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.

Orlando Pirates drew their opening league match 2-2 at home against Stellenbosch FC and were then held to a goalless draw away to Marumo Gallants.

The Buccaneers will next be in action on Saturday, 11 September when then welcome Swallows FC to the Orlando Stadium for a mouth-watering Soweto derby at 15:00.
