According to Khoza, Carling Black Label approached the league to request for the tournament to be brought forward in a different format instead of being played next year

And the reason for that is that the new PSL season will have no Knockout Cup competition except the Nedbank Cup which is usually played in the final six months of the campaign.

The two companies – PSL and Carling Black Label – recently came together to form a partnership as the league wanted to replace the Telkom Knockout Cup.

According to the agreement on the new format for this year, all the 16 PSL teams will be voted for by football fans but only four teams with high number of votes will enter the draw.

And those those teams will be drawn against each other in the semi-finals with the winners battling it out in the Carling Black Label Cup final.

The league and Carling Black Label will share more details around the knockout competition in September, but the four-team tournament is scheduled for November 12.

CARLING BLACK LABEL CUP EXCITES PSL CHAIRMAN DR KHOZA

“After the announcement of the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup, our long-time partners, SAB, were eager to come back as a Cup Sponsor, but unfortunately the constraints imposed by the World Cup calendar did not allow this in 2022,” said Khoza.

“They proposed an innovative appetizer for the 2023 Knockout Cup, the 2022 Carling Cup, to take place as a one-day affair on 12 November.

“This was welcomed by the Executive Committee, especially for the partner that has been so good at marketing and positioning football in the country and would be great for spectators to have a window-view of what would happen in the 2023 Knockout Cup season.”
