Bafana centre-back Daniel Cardoso has declared he is content at Kaizer Chiefs, despite strong interest from the United States’ Major League Soccer.

The 30-year-old is eyeing his first piece of silverware with the Naturena-based side, having been with them since signing from Free State Stars in 2015.

With Amakhosi dishing out new contracts in the past month, he was one of the players to receive an extension, and has expressed that he is content with his position with the club.

“This is a club that I’ve been with for the last five seasons and I’m happy here, and I’m glad that they’ve extended my stay,” said Cardoso. “It just shows that they have faith in me, and I want to continue working hard to bring trophies back to Naturena… Chiefs will let you guys know.”

New York reunion with ex-Bafana star

The club that has shown interest in Cardoso is New York Redbulls where – should a move materialise – he would reunited with former Stars assistant coach Bradley Carnell.

The former Bafana defender has taken up a similar role in the American outfit, working alongside ex-US international midfielder Chris Armas.

According to Cardoso, Carnell has been in contact with one of his representatives Stanton Frederics, who too has also represented Chiefs and Bafana.

“[The interest] was pretty strong. I’ve worked with Bradley Carnell before and obviously, you know he’s in America at the moment, so he’s been speaking to my stand-in agent Stanton Fredericks, who will have more information if you need,” he confirmed.

Cardoso has played 24 games in all competitions for Kaizer Chiefs,, netting five goals, with the bulk of those coming from the penalty spot.

He will be eyeing another start as Amakhosi travel to face Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium on Saturday.

Their next game after that is the big Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 29 February.
