Cape Town City winger Gift Links has joined the growing contingent of South Africans plying their trade in Europe after completing a move to Denmark.

The 20-year-old has played in Egypt, and joined the Citizens at the start of the 2018/19 season.

European move for City starlet

His stay in the Mother City has come to an end, after linking up with Danish Superliga outfit AGF Aarhus on what is said to be a club record fee.

City made the big announcement on Monday, not revealing the figure that exchanged hands on completing the move.

“Cape Town City and Danish Superliga side Aarhus GF have agreed to terms over the club-record transfer of 20-year-old South African international Gift Links,” City said on social media.

Though only 20, the youngster is somewhat of a journeyman, having travelled as far as North Africa.

Links made his professional debut as a teenager in the colours of the now-defunct Platinum Stars in 2016.

He made just eight appearances for Dikwena, but that proved to be enough for him to catch the eye of Egyptian scouts, as he secured a move to Pyramids FC in the country’s top flight.

For Pyramids, the youngster featured in 13 matches across competitions before his homecoming, where he joined City on what was also a record transfer fee for the club.

According to Links, the move to the Mother City has paid off, as a European transfer was high on his agenda when he left Egypt.

“I had heard good things about the chairman John Comitis. I knew Cape Town City is the club that could take me to Europe. I developed so much here, I can’t thank the club enough,” Links said.

Links enjoyed regular game time at Cape Town City, featuring in all but four of the club’s league games in his only full season.

He contributed with five goals and three assists, and helped the club to silverware as they collected the 2018 MTN8 trophy.

The player also appeared in three league matches in the ongoing season, bagging an assist, and played the full 90 minutes in the MTN8 quarterfinal, where they were knocked out at home by Platinum Stars.

Links now follows in the footsteps of Bafana legend Sibusiso Zuma, who represented FC Copenhagen in the Danish League, and joins ex-SA Under-20 teammate Liam Jordan, currently playing for HB Koge in the country’s lower division.
