The first Western Cape derby between Cape Town City and newly-promoted Stellenbosch FC takes place in the PSL on Saturday.

But it does so under a cloud after a late venue switch from the Cape Town Stadium to Athlone Stadium was slammed by City owner John Comitis.

With the playing surface deemed unplayable four days ahead of the keenly-anticipated contest, the head honcho aired his grievances in a withering statement.

He said: “It is no secret the League (PSL) season starts each year in August and the home opening game against Stellenbosch had been booked and agreed in advance between both the club and the city’s venue.

“As early as June the club stressed the importance of the opening home fixture being at the Cape Town Stadium, raising concerns over the surface after various non-sporting events such as Monster Trucks had been accepted before the start of the season.

“However, we were assured the pitch would be ready. It is not.”

City were forced to settle for a share of the spoils in their season opener away to Baroka FC last weekend.

Four first half goals ultimately left Benni McCarthy’s side as frustrated as their chairman, as a two-goal lead was squandered in Polokwane.

Keanu Cupido and Kermit Erasmus had the Cape club sitting pretty on the half-hour mark, only for the hosts to hit back through Mduduzi Mdantsane and Tshediso Patjie before the break.

Stellenbosch were far more content with a draw on the road, as they made their first appearance in the South African top flight last Saturday.

Steve Barker’s men held Chippa United to a goalless stalemate at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Now they turn their attentions to a short trip out of the winelands for their first rival clash in the Cape.
