Cape Town City FC chairperson John Comitis has been fined for bringing the league into disrepute, Premier Soccer League prosecutor Zola Majavu has confirmed.

Comitis finally appeared before the PSL Disciplinary Committee on Thursday after comments he made in the media last month.

John Comitis expressed his displeasure

Comitis was vocal about his displeasure at the ruling by South African Football Association (SAFA)-appointed arbitrator Nazeer Cassim SC’s that Amakhosi be allowed to play two of their missed DStv Premiership matches.

Kaizer Chiefs failed to show up for two games in December 2021 due to an outbreak of Covid-19 at Naturena.

Speaking on Robert Marawa’s podcast, Marawa Sports Worldwide, following the ruling, Comitis called the decision a “dark day in South African football”.

Kaizer Chiefs went on to play those two outstanding matches – against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows – and lost them both!

John Comitis missed the first scheduled hearing as he was out the country.

Majavu confirmed that Comitis had pleaded guilty and was sanctioned.

“He [Comitis] is fined a monitory amount of R80 000, of which amount is holy suspended for a period of 12 months on condition that during the period of suspension that he is not found guilty of the same offence,” said Majavu, speaking through the PSL’s media department.  

“He was further directed to send a written apology to the executive committee of the league as well as to Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.”

The Citizens boss was also ordered to pay the cost of the two sittings.

Comitis may well have the last laugh with Cape Town City set to beat Kaizer Chiefs to a prized CAF spot next season.

Cape Town City are currently in second place in the DStv Premiership standings and a victory over Stellenbosch FC in their final match on Saturday, 21 May would go a long way to securing them a spot in Africa next season.

Kick-off in the Winelands is at 15:00.
