Cape Town City FC: NO mass clear-out at Mother City club

Cape Town City FC Commercial Director Michel Comitis says the DStv Premiership side are not planning a mass clear-out of players.

Cape Town City FC Commercial Director Michel Comitis says the DStv Premiership side are not planning a mass clear-out of players.

While both Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu – among others – have released large numbers of players, the Citizens have a more settled squad.

Cape Town City will play in next season’s CAF Champions League

Cape Town City finished second in the recently completed 2021/22 season behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns to secure their place in the CAF Champions League.

Speaking to iDiski Times, Comitis reportedly said: “I think it’s a bad time when you see 15 players released from a club, but at least it shows some intention.

“I think a lot of clubs are starting to realise that football is not a part-time profession, that there’s players in this country that aren’t prepared to do what’s needed to compete at the highest level, then there’s no point in carrying passengers.

“And I think that’s why you see a lot of players without work at the moment.

“I can definitely confirm that there’s not going to be 15 players leaving Cape Town City, but I think that’s a sign of just where we’re at the moment. Some clubs really need to change things and others need to keep consistent in terms of what they’re doing.”

Part-time players Bongani Mpandle and Shane Roberts are the only two to have left the Mother City side to date, while defender Keanu Cupido and midfielder Mpho Makola have extended their stays at the club.
