But can the Brazilians lift the trophy with victory over Golden Arrows at home on Tuesday, 12 April?

The short answer is NO, but they can certainly take a big step towards doing so in the very near future.

Should the Tshwane giants as expected go on to clinch this season’s title, it would represent an incredible fifth consecutive league victory for Masandawana and a 12th title in what is the 26th season since the PSL era kicked off in 1996/97.

A look at the current DStv Premiership standings shows Mamelodi Sundowns have 54 points after 24 matches.

Their closest challengers are Royal AM with 43 points after a similar number of matches, while third-placed Kaizer Chiefs have 39 points after 22 matches.

That means Amakhosi in actual fact could end up with more log points than Royal AM.

Should Kaizer Chiefs win all of their remaining eight matches, they’d pick up 24 points and finish on 63 for the season. That’s the most any team other than Mamelodi Sundowns can achieve.

That would mean the Brazilians would need 9 more points to tie, and 10 to take an unassailable lead.

Of course, there’s NO chance Kaizer Chiefs will pick up a maximum of 24 log points from their remaining matches!

Considering they couldn’t even beat lowly TS Galaxy at home in their most recent match, there is nothing to suggest they’d beat far better sides on the road.

However, should that miracle indeed take place, Mamelodi Sundowns would need 10 points to make mathematically certain of the title.

With six matches remaining, they require three wins and a draw – or something similar.

Interestingly, Mamelodi Sundowns will play Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM (both away) in their final three matches of the season.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ 6 remaining DStv Premiership matches:

Tuesday, 12 April v Golden Arrows (H) – 15:00

Wednesday, 27 April v Cape Town City FC (H) – 19:30

Tuesday, 3 May v Sekhukhune United (A) – 17:00

Sunday, 8 May v Kaizer Chiefs (A) – 17:00

Saturday, 14 May v Stellenbosch FC (H) – 15:00

Saturday, 21 May v Royal AM (A) – 15:00
