The short answer is NO, but if results go their way, they can take a massive step towards doing so.

When the Tshwane giants do clinch this season’s title, it would represent an incredible fifth consecutive league victory for Masandawana and a 12th title in what is the 26th season since the PSL era kicked off in 1996/97.

A look at the current DStv Premiership standings shows Mamelodi Sundowns have 57 points after 25 matches.

Their closest challengers are Royal AM with 44 points after a similar number of matches, while third-placed Cape Town City FC have 40 points after 24 matches.

Kaizer Chiefs have 39 points after 23 matches, which means Amakhosi in actual fact could end up with more log points than Royal AM and in actual fact are still Mamelodi Sundowns’ ‘closest’ challengers.

Should Kaizer Chiefs win all of their remaining seven matches, they’d pick up 21 points and finish on 60 for the season. That’s the most any team other than Mamelodi Sundowns can achieve.

That would mean the Brazilians would need 3 more points to tie, and 4 to take an unassailable lead.

Of course, there’s NO chance Kaizer Chiefs will pick up a maximum of 21 log points from their remaining matches!

However, should that miracle indeed take place, Mamelodi Sundowns would need just four points to make mathematically certain of the title.

With five matches remaining, they’d require a win and a draw – or something similar.

While Mamelodi Sundowns are in CAF Champions League action this weekend (Saturday, 23 April at 18:00) and Cape Town City FC have the weekend off, both Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM do have matches scheduled.

Amakhosi will take on Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium in the Winelands on Saturday at 17:00, while Royal AM face a KwaZulu-Natal derby against AmaZulu on Sunday, 24 April at the Chatsworth Stadium at 15:00.

Interestingly, Mamelodi Sundowns will play Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM (both away) in their final three matches of the season.
