Baloyi: There’s nothing new coach can do with THIS Chiefs squad

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Brian Baloyi is of the view that the club needs more quality players than they need a new coach.

A section of Chiefs fans are up in arms calling for Arthur Zwane’s sacking following what they deem a disappointing first season as head coach.

Under Zwane, Chiefs finished fifth and made the semi-finals of both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup but that is below-par by the club’s standards.

However, Chiefs have been underperforming for eight full years with no silverware to show for it, but their fans want immediate changes to their technical team.

Baloyi, though, doesn’t think any coach can achieve anything with the current crop of players, and he wants Chiefs to add more quality signings to challenge for trophies.

“You can fire coach Arthur and bring in another coach, but there is nothing that coach is going to do with the type of players Chiefs have right now,” Baloyi told Newzroom Afrika.

“I think a lot of times, we shy away from telling the truth. More than 50 percent of that squad is not Kaizer Chiefs material.”

“If Chiefs really want to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates, they need to dig deep, go look and find quality players,” added Baloyi.

A legendary Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper has weighed in on whether or not Arthur Zwane is the reason the team underperformed this past season.

Zwane was appointed as head coach in May 2022 to try and bring back the old glory days at Chiefs but it wasn’t to be.

Now, a section of Amakhosi fans want Zwane gone and they are calling for the management to hire a more experienced coach to steer the ship.

However, Brian Baloyi, who played with Zwane at Chiefs for many years, doesn’t think his former teammate is the problem.

Baloyi believes Chiefs will still not improve even if Zwane is fired and a new coach is brought in, saying the club should invest in signing quality players.

In his own words, Baloyi said more than 50 percent of the current squad doesn’t deserve to be playing for the Soweto giants.

And for that reason, he wants the management to do something about if Chiefs are to challenge both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
