Romain Folz has resigned from his position as the head coach of Marumo Gallants after reportedly being asked to accept a demotion in front of the first team squad.

Folz is understood to have emphatically rejected the suggestion and has instead tendered his resignation.

The 32-year-old Frenchman had been the youngest head coach in the league but heading into the weekend Gallants were rooted to the bottom of the PSL log having drawn four and lost one in their five DStv Premiership matches this term.

“Romain Folz is no longer the coach of Marumo Gallants,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

“The coach resigned last night. There were many issues that the coach wasn’t happy about and he decided to resign. The club wanted him to be the assistant coach and he refused that and opted to leave. He resigned last night after the technical team changes were suggested to him in front of the players that he would no longer be the head coach,” the source added.

Time’s up

Folz came into the PSL having enjoyed a spell in the technical team of Botswana-based Township Rollers FC.

The club opted against retaining coach Dan Malesela at the end of last season, a move which was widely criticised and slammed by Gallants’ fans.

In July, when Folz was appointed, Gallants’ chairman Abram Sello was impressed by his energetic approach but it seems the club have since soured on the French-Moroccan.

At the unveiling, Sello stated: “We welcome coach Romain Folz to the team, he brings an impressive and energetic approach to football that we believe will be a great fit for Marumo Gallants.”

With the season barely a month in it seems that the fit was chaffing and there had been reports that Folz couldn’t command the respect of the squad.
