“When I left [in 2016], Sundowns was already high. I came here as a very young boy from Tuks and I learnt a lot. The club changed my life, we won trophies,” the Bafana Bafana star told Mamelodi Sundowns TV.

“To come back and see how the club has improved and how they’ve gotten even more quality players was also very influential in my decision to come back here. I’m really excited about it.”

Zungu’s arrival strengthens a squad that was already clearly the best in the country.

PSL transfer news: Golden Arrows announce a double signing

Co-coach Rhulani Mokwena hopes that the move fosters even greater competition for places.

“We’ve got very very good players in Bongani Zungu’s position and he’s a very very good player, which makes the competition even stronger,” Mokwena said.

“Players that come to Sundowns know they have to compete.”

Mokwena has already been impressed by the former Rangers and Amiens man.

After the signing Mokwena said: “He was very patient, even more lucrative than we had thrown, but sometimes it helps when there are very good relations between the coaches and the player because their desire to come and work with the coaches and to be part of the setup helps. I want to thank Bongani and his family for the support that they gave him in trying to make sure that he chose us instead of the other options that they had and we are just excited that the club has made that decision to support in bringing ‘Bongz’ here. We are looking forward to him coming into the team and competing for a position which will be very difficult. We’ve got very good players in Bongani Zungu’s position and then he’s also a very, very good player that makes the competition even stronger.”
