Chiefs are believed to be looking to overhaul their current squad and now Nurkovic has found himself as the first casualty.

Nurkovic hit the ground running

The target man proved to be a talisman and a quick fan favourite at the club, under the tutelage of former coach Ernst Middendorp. In fact, it had looked as if the players goals and at times unstoppable partnership with fellow striker Leonardo Castro was going to lead the Amakhosi to their first league title since 2015 under another former coach Stuart Baxter. That season saw Chiefs turn down offers of up to R15 million the services of Nurkovic. At the start of this season they were reportedly ready to let the player go but the offers they received, didn’t match their evaluation for him.

But that would prove to be as good as it got for Nurkovic at Chiefs, as the next two seasons were riddled with injuries. Despite his late surge in the 2020/21 CAF Champions League, where he played a pivotal role in leading Amakhosi to the final, he failed to build on that in the season just concluded. He was then put up for sale by the club in both of the previous windows, but no potential suitors seemed to come forward to try and prize him away from Naturena.

Chiefs opt against contract renewal

It was expected that Chiefs would trigger the player’s one year option and try again to cash in on him, but the club instead announced on their social media platforms, that it was severing ties with the player and won’t take up that option to extend beyond June 30 2022.

“Kaizer Chiefs will not extend Samir Nurković’s contract when it expires on 30 June 2022, ending a three-year relationship. The popular Serbian forward began his Chiefs career like a house on fire, scoring 14 goals in his maiden season.

Nurkovic scored 12 league goals in his first season at Chiefs but his next two seasons would see him only scoring four. It is then perhaps no surprise that the club have taken this decision.
