Phungwayo had been confirmed to have been arrested last week in connection with a couple of illegal acts which include vehicle hijacking and being in possession of stolen property.
The news of a former Pirates player being involved and arrested for criminal activities soon made the rounds and spread like a wildfire on social media last week. At first, the identity of the former players was concealed from the media, but it did not take long for the rumours to go around claiming that it was Phungwayo, and it took an even shorter period of time for the official confirmation of that identity.

Phungwayo was then summoned to a court appearance on Monday where it was decided that he will remain behind bars until his formal bail application on Thursday. Sources close to the situation predicted at the time that the 33-year-old was going to be granted bail and walk away a free man at least for the time being.
That prediction has since come true according to KickOff.com who report that Phungwayo was granted bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate court, at an amount set at R5000. He is still expected to come back to court as the case continues, but a date for this particular date has not yet been established.
Speaking to the same publication, a close friend of Phungwayo, Joe Seanego explains that the former left back’s case has even been moved from a stage 5 charge to a stage 1 charge, which can only be an advantage to him. Seanego then also confirmed the news of Phungwayo’s release.
“Yes the boy (Phungwayo) is out, we are busy paying his R5000 bail as we speak, At the moment we are still in court, as they are still going to inform us on when he is expected to appear in court again.” Said Seanego.

Two hijacked cars were found at the player’s residence by acquaintances known by Phungwayo who is claiming no knowledge of any criminal activities. It remains to be seen when Phungwayo will be expected back in court, and what the final verdict will be.
