Bloemfontein Celtic will be unable to reinforce their senior squad at all this season as a transfer ban comes into effect for their next two windows.

Safa CEO Tebogo Motlanthe has confirmed that Bloemfontein Celtic’s sanction comes into effect, enforcing the ruling by Fifa in relation to the club’s failure to settle outstanding debts owed to former goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb.

Bloemfontein Celtic transfer ban in effect

Celtic released the Cameroonian stopper in 2019 but with two years left on his contract, the compensation he was entitled to has never materialised.

Fifa found that Celtic had breached the contract and duly imposed a one-year transfer ban on the club, spanning across two transfer windows, which came into effect on 1 July 2021.

“Celtic have not paid so that ban kicks in,” Motlanthe confirms to Kickoff.com.

“It must go via the PSL, who will announce it. Remember, even with the Chiefs matter it was [done through] the PSL, because we have sent the letter to the League. Yes, [it is in effect now] because they did not meet their obligation.”

Siwelele owner Max Tshabalala backed into a corner

Bloemfontein Celtic owner Max Tshabalala has repeatedly claimed to be financing the running of the club out of his own pocket and earlier this year dismissed long-serving CEO Khumbulani Konco.

Despite signing a new kit deal this week, Celtic still don’t have a lead sponsor and the club is not in the best shape financially.

The club, which is one of the best supported in the country, have almost miraculously managed to avoid dropping out of the Premier Soccer League even as they endured turbulent seasons.

Multiple attempts to sell the club have met with frustration and they will now have to get through the 2021/22 season without the prospect of refreshing their squad.
