Khanyisa Mayo extends Cape Town City contract?

City owner John Comitis knows what he’s doing and is also aware of the vast transfer fee Khanyisa Mayo can fetch in the current market. The Mother City club have no intention of selling Mayo, for the time being at least. If or when they do sell, they’ll want to get a substantial figure. Mayo has been linked to Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and even Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga SC).

SABC Sport reported in late April that City had initially triggered the two-year option on Mayo’s contract with talk in the football fraternity that Sundowns were ready to lure him away from Cape Town.

Mayo jointly wins PSL Golden Boot in 2022-23

24-year-oldKhanyisa Mayo bagged 12 goals this season in the PSL, alongside Sundowns marksman Peter Shalulile. By triggering his contract extension option, City are protecting themselves from losing him for nothing. With the new offer allegedly close to being agreed, Mayo’s terms will be extended to June 2028.

Here’s what Mayo’s agent had to say:

“They have exercised his option I don’t think that’s news to anyone, with his performances I would believe that City are keen to keep him past the option. Mr. Comitis isn’t successful by mistake,” said Basia Michaels.

“We would definitely need to look at the market and what it has to offer in this window and should something not happen I would expect nothing less from him than to want to extend Khanyisa’s stay, especially considering he is happy at City. He is playing great football, scoring regularly and he is now the league’s top goal scorer. I do expect to see him back with Bafana.”

Cape Town City pip Kaizer Chiefs to 4th place in the PSL

Ironically, Mduduzi Mdantsane was the match-winner for Cape Town City. The playmaker is widely expected to be joining Kaizer Chiefs next season, but today his 9th-minute goal was enough to seal 4th place for the Citizens and condemn the Glamour Boys to 5th place in the final PSL table.

The Citizens had been reduced to 10 men as early as the 34th minute when Taariq Fielies was given his marching orders, but Mdantsane’s goal ensured City claimed three points at FNB Stadium and 4th place in the PSL.
