Kaizer Chiefs are currently in contention for two pieces of silverware, and striker Bernard Parker is confident that the club can come away with something come the end of the season.

The Glamour Boys sit pretty at the top of the league standings and begin their Nedbank Cup campaign at home to first division outfit Royal Eagles on Saturday.

Parker sets sights on more silverware

Parker, who has been at the club since 2011, has won four trophies in Chiefs colours, but glory moments have dried up in recent years with no silverware since 2015.

The veteran striker has recently signed a contract extension and is upbeat that glory days are not too far off on the horizon.

“I am blessed and grateful to have had my contract extended,” says Parker, according to the Kaizer Chiefs website. “This will allow me to leave Chiefs with further success, I have lived the dream here. I have always given my all here at Chiefs, and this contract extension is the reward for my loyalty and the service I have given to the team. I am glad to continue to be an ambassador for this club for another season.”

Parker has experienced both the highs and lows during his Kaizer Chiefs career, and the club’s lowest point was undoubtedly the past season, where they finished ninth in their league and missed out on the Nedbank Cup title – losing to TS Galaxy in the final.

However, looking at the remaining matches for the club, the 33-year-old is keen to help end the five-year trophy drought.

“Potentially we have 16 games left for the season; 11 in the league and hopefully 5 in the Nedbank Cup – we can achieve something,” he says. “I will try to use my experience the best way I can on and off the field to help the team in the next 18 months. My aim will be to win as many trophies as we can. It has been a long time since we tasted success, so we are just going to work hard week in and week out to ensure that we are successful.”

Chiefs’ next opponents were on the verge of promotion to the top flight last season, but failed to do enough in the pre-season playoffs.

They now find themselves fighting relegation from the second tier, having only collected 14 points in their 20 matches.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 18:00 (SAST).
