AmaZulu have made a slow start to the season, losing 2-1 to Cape Town City in their MTN8 quarter-final and then going down 1-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns and settling for a goalless draw with Swallows FC in their opening two 2021/22 DStv Premiership matches.

In an interview on the club’s website, Benni McCarthy offered his thoughts on AmaZulu’s slow start to the season.

“Tough game, Swallows won two games. They beat Orlando Pirates and Royal AM. So they are on a high. Their coach got the players that he wanted and they look fantastic,” McCarthy said.

“And for us, we are still building and we are still finding our feet. Some of the new guys are still trying to settle in the team and finding their feet as well.

“So it wasn’t too bad, but this was not the usual AmaZulu standards. Again, we started very slow. Against Cape Town City, we started very slow and we conceded in the first 15 minutes.”

Benni McCarthy said what did not help matters was the slow start made to the matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Swallows.

“Against Mamelodi Sundowns, we started very slow and against Swallows … same thing and it seems to be a trend. We cannot afford to let games like these slip away from us,” he added.

“When you get one or two chances, you have to take them. I’m afraid I think the creativity in the team is also not on par.”

AmaZulu, who finished last season as runners-up in the league, are currently down in 13th place.

They will next be in action in their CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg tie at home against Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets FC on Friday, 10 September at 17:00.

AmaZulu’s next DStv Premiership assignment is also at home against table-toppers SuperSport United on Wednesday, 15 September at 17:00.
