Chiefs are rumoured to be interested in Sithebe and should the rumours be true, McCarthy may have given the club an unlikely boost.

Sithebe has been key for Amazulu

Sithebe has been a prominent member of the Amazulu side for several seasons now since joining them in 2017, and his consistent performances in the Usuthu midfield have not gone unnoticed. The dreadlocked star has seen his efforts rewarded with several call ups to the Bafana Bafana squad , earning several caps for the national team, with his debut coming in a 1-1 draw against neighbours Namibia in October 2020.

The national team coach’s eye is not the only one Sithebe has caught in that period, as he has consistently been linked with a move to Soweto giants Chiefs. The links became more prominent two seasons ago, but the FIFA enforced transfer ban on Amakhosi saw all of that talk begin to die down. A change of managers at the helm may have also influenced that decision as former coach Gavin Hunt then opted for the free agent option of Phatutshedzo Nange before the ban brought those plans to a halt.

However, reports linking Sithebe to Chiefs began to resurface earlier this week, and with his contract at Amazulu set to come to an end at the conclusion of the current DStv Premiership season, the deal seems more and more possible for all parties. The report did add that Amakhosi would prefer to bring the player to the club as soon as possible, and McCarthy may have given his boyhood club a hope of the deal happening in January, with his latest comments.

McCarthy adds further fuel to the fire

“He (Sithebe) is very much part of our (Amazulu) plans, and the club is working 24/7 to try and work out the situation but at the end of the day, it is down to the player. If the player has bigger ambition and he thinks the grass is greener elsewhere, then what are you to do?You don’t want to stand in anyone’s way because we want the best for the football club, we want the best for the players, we want the best for everyone. If the player is getting advice from outside people that is best to go there than to stay here, then so be it. We move on. There is hungry, young talent that we can use, so that’s the situation”. Said McCarthy speaking to Kickoff.com
