Usuthu suffered a 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates on Thursday to end 2021 in fifth place on the DStv Premiership standings with five wins, 12 draws and three losses from their 20 matches.

That left AmaZulu a whopping 17 points behind log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

In addition, Usuthu have played one more match than Masandawana and only have 10 left in the season.

McCarthy’s side created a number of chances at the Orlando Stadium, but was left ruing their inability to convert their chances.

AmaZulu were undone by a brace from Kwame Peprah

AmaZulu were undone by goals from Kwame Peprah (37th and 48th minutes) after Luvuyo Memela had put Usuthu ahead with just four minutes on the clock.

Reflecting in post-match interview, McCarthy told SuperSport: “I’m desperate for new faces, I’m desperate for refreshments in the team and quality players.

“You can see, 12 draws is not normal for any team. When you play the way that we play, we play expansive football where you want to dominate the opposition, and we manage to do so, but the final third is where we disappoint ourselves.”

McCarthy added: “We’ve done exceptionally well last season and this season, but you need to keep everyone on their toes, you need to keep everyone honest and at the moment there’s a level of complacency and there’s absolutely nothing you can do.

“The players can only give you as much as they can because we’ve reached the level where we are and we’re going to need assistance in taking us to the next level. When I say assistance, that means a couple of new faces and good quality players.”
