OPINION: Did Benni McCarthy play a role in Cristiano Ronaldo’s downfall?

Benni McCarthy was appointed as the attacking coach for Manchester United. Upon his arrival Cristiano Ronaldo issues deepened before he was axed. Is this a coincidence?

McCarthy was appointed as United’s attack coach on 30 July 2022.

It was during this time that Ronaldo was struggling to earn a place in Erik ten Hags side. Fast forward almost three months later and the iconic CR7 is without a club, as previously reported by The South African. Did Benni play a role in the demise of Ronaldo?

Simply put – no he did not.

In fact, McCarthy had quite the opposite effect on Ronaldo. Furthermore, Ronaldo earned a rare premier league a fortnight after McCarthy arrived. He was seen smiling side-by side McCarthy and taking part in the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates legends personalized attacking drills.

The phone slapping incident, arguments with the coach and Piers Morgan bombshell interview was between Ronaldo and ten Hag In fact, McCarthy is the only person CR7 did not name and shame during his explosive bombshell interview.

Therefore, Ronaldo left United on good terms with Benni. It’s a real pity we couldn’t see more magic between these two football legends but McCarthy will forever have ‘coached Cristiano Ronaldo’ on his CV’.
