The Polokwane derby at Peter Mokaba Stadium between Baroka and Polokwane City on Saturday could go some way towards deciding who keeps their top-flight status come May.

Football fans in Polokwane will likely hope that both of its teams stay up, but at this point, there is little telling what will happen.

With only three points separating 11th-placed Cape Town City from bottom-of-the-table Baroka, everything is still up in the air.

Polokwane City in 14th are in the thick of the clutter at the bottom themselves. Although they ended a 10-match losing streak in all competitions with a 2-0 win over Chippa United, they were brought back to earth by a 4-1 loss to Orlando Pirates.

Although he felt that Pirates’ second goal should have been disallowed due to offside, coach Clinton Larsen admitted that Polokwane City let the game slip with a dismal first half performance.

“I thought we got what we deserved in the first half,” Larsen told SuperSport TV. “We conceded three goals not four, if you know what I mean. But we couldn’t handle their pace.”

Meanwhile, Baroka also suffered defeat in midweek, going down 1-0 to Golden Arrows under the temporary guidance of Matsimela Thoka. New coach Dylan Kerr is still awaiting his work permit.

The defeat leaves them six games without a win and in dire need of a turnaround.

Kick-off time and prediction

Kick-off time: 11 January, 15:30

Prediction:

Sit tight because this could get interesting. When the odds are 2.50 the expected chance of winning is 40%, as it is for Baroka, they only win 7% of their matches with these odds.

That leaves Polokwane in with a chance, despite their expected chance of winning being just 35%. They win 38% matches with these odds.
