Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has explained why he fielded Siyabonga Ngezana against Richards Bay on Saturday despite the fierce criticism he’s facing.

Ngezana committed costing errors against Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend in a match Amakhosi lost 4-0 and fans weren’t expecting to see him any time soon on the field.

Kaizer Chiefs were able to redeem themselves against the Natal Rich Boyz with a 1-0 win.

The 25-year-old defender wasn’t among the starting XI, but was brought on late in the second half.

The crowd expressed its displeasure and it became worse when he was cautioned a few minutes after making his way on.

However, Zwane believes that Ngezana is “one of the top defenders” they have at the club.

WHY WE PLAYED NGEZANA AGAINST RICHARDS BAY

“Football taught me something, it’s how you come back after a setback,” Zwane said in the press conference after the match.

“And if Siya [Ngezana] is never gonna get the opportunity, he’s never gonna grow. He’s a player and as I said earlier on that football is a game of mistakes. Some of the mistakes are gonna be critical or they gonna happen at a wrong time just like it happened you know and unfortunately he couldn’t recover but it’s part of learning for him.

“And he actually when he went in there let alone the yellow card, he brought in some stability at the back as well we had to now play with three and push the full-backs and wait for the right moment for them to come at us so that we can get the spaces behind because we were one man down and energy levels were dropping.

“I think adding Siya gave us that stability. So yes, I understand our supporters sometimes they feel little bit insecure because of the previous performance but it’s part of the game.

“His confidence will grow and even our supporters will start believing in him as well because he’s been one of our top defenders when you look at the games especially against Royal AM, against Maritzburg [United] at home. So except for the two mistakes he made against Sundowns unfortunately those mistakes were costly but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad player overnight.

“And we’re building a team here, we’re building a team that we’re still going to make a lot of mistakes because it’s a work in progress but as soon as this mission is running like a well-oiled machine I don’t think it’s gonna be easy for any team to come out especially when we’re hosting them.”
