Are Orlando Pirates making a massive mistake in the transfer market?

Irvin and the guys need to think long and hard about this decision.

Orlando Pirates are releasing several players ahead of the 2024-2025 campaign. They might live to regret this decision regarding one player.

Hotto is on the way out

The most handsomely paid player at the club, utility man Deon Hotto is one of several players with a contract expiring this month. Pirates have already released Souaibou Marou, Fortune Makaringe, Thabang Monare, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Richard Ofori and Kermit Erasmus and there could be more exits soon. Hotto, who is on R500k a month, could be next as the club moves into a new era grappling with CAF Champions League football. Is that a smart decision though?

Orlando Pirates need versatility and experience

Hotto, a star for Namibia at Afcon 2023, has been a rock-solid operator down the left-hand side of the Pirates team since 2020 when he signed from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits. Equally adept in defence or midfield, he’s a manager’s dream. At 33, however, his contract expires in June and is unlikely to be extended. The vastly-experienced star has 65 caps and 10 goals for his country. He’s also made 27 appearances in the DStv Premiership this season, not missing a single game, scoring a goal and supplying five assists.

If he leaves, he’ll certainly do so with the goodwill of fans, teammates and technical staff. He’ll be difficult to replace.

Goalkeeping reshuffle?

With Richard Ofori and Siyabonga Mpontshane released, reinforcements between the sticks are needed. SoccerLaduma reports that Pirates will move for Nigeria and Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Failing this, The Buccaneers will fall back on a potential move for AmaZulu and Bafana Bafana star Veli Mothwa. 2017 Afcon winner with Cameroon, Fabrice Ondoa, is also a target. Nwabali’s reported R30 Million evaluation by Chippa scared Kaizer Chiefs off, but Pirates are still keen at that price point. The 28-year-old goalkeeper starred for Nigeria at Afcon 2023, helping them to the final where they lost to hosts Ivory Coast.

Should the Sea Robbers retain Hotto for one more campaign or let him go now?
