Are Mamelodi Sundowns the most boring team in the PSL?

With Mamelodi Sundowns closing in on another PSL title and Chiefs looking lost, when will a proper title challenger come along?

As champions elect Mamelodi Sundowns claimed yet another inevitable PSL win, we can’t shake the feeling that it’s getting a bit dull. Where are you, Kaizer Chiefs?

With the Brazilians winning each of the last five DStv Premiership crowns, and six of the last seven, is it time for a shake-up?

RUMOUR: Lionel Messi to the Premier League?

The Mamelodi Sundowns train doesn’t stop at any stations

You know what they say, ‘life is a journey, not a destination’ or something like that. Right now, everything that Sundowns do feels as though it’s a means to an end, and it’s taking them to a predetermined destination. There is no romance to this story, and almost nobody is enjoying the ride, except for the club’s fans of course. They’re grinding out results with a cold, clinical, calculated efficiency and Rhulani is loving every second.

Rhulani’s team have now won 13 PSL matches on the bounce and lead second-placed Richards Bay by 19 points. Yes, Richards Bay have two games in hand, but still. The Brazilians have a level of owner investment that feels like a cheat code, and it ensures that their squad is always packed with quality. Fun for them and their supporters, but tedious for the other 15 clubs.

Brazilians challenging on multiple fronts

In their next four games, Sundowns will be involved in three separate competitions. Their next two outings are PSL meetings with Sekhukhune and Orlando Pirates. Then, they’re up against none other than Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup. On February 11th they face Al-Hilal as their CAF Champions League group stage gets underway. Downs fans will be demanding success on all fronts.

Richards Bay provide more excitement

On their debut in the top-flight, Richards Bay have been a breath of fresh air. This is a team that knows its limitations, but isn’t afraid to mix it with the big boys. Of course, there’s still plenty of the season still to run and the wheels could still fall off, but that doesn’t look likely. It’ll be fascinating to see how this season pans out for them. Even more crucially, their performance in their second season in the top-flight will be the true test.

What about the mighty Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates?

Well, the less said the better, probably? Giants will always be giants and their time will come again. However, the fact that Sundowns have no credible challengers to their crown make this PSL season a truly dull affair.
