PSL news: AmaZulu looking to knock big three off their perch

Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have, for ages, been the country’s top clubs, but AmaZulu is determined to give them a run for their money.

AmaZulu are one of the oldest club’s plying their trade in the local top flight, but their longevity is not quite reflected in their trophy cabinet.

The KwaZulu-Natal outfit was formed way back in 1932, but has gone over 40 years without a major trophy to its name.

In the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era, AmaZulu have not done much beyond making up the numbers in the top brass, with their biggest honour not stretching above gaining promotions into the premier division.

However, their achievements up to this point have not seen them even induce a sweat unto the PSL’s traditional big three, but the club’s chairman Patrick Sokhela is determined to see his charges make a climb among the country’s very best.

“It makes us happy to see our numbers and it helps us to get sponsors, it’s not a mistake that we are there, our marketing has been brilliant,” Sokhela said.

“We now need to make sure that it transfers onto the field because if we did well in the cups and league we would easily be number one. We must now deliver on the field.”

AmaZulu were one of the clubs who made the earliest inroads into the transfer market by signing strikers Andre de Jong and Lehlhonolo Majoro.

For coach Cavin Johnson, there is no mandate to produce silverware. This was confirmed by Sokhela, who is quoted by KickOff

“We don’t have a mandate for the coach this season, as a club we need to make things right for growth of this brand,” he said.

According to Sokhela, club is looking to have players earning national caps, and later disturbing the apple cart by knocking the big clubs off their perch.

“I would like to see the players we invested in for development getting regular game time in the PSL, have representatives in all the national teams. We’ve done well in the junior level, now let’s look at Bafana Bafana.

“We must compete for the league and cups, improve our away record. We would like to have a trophy this season, no doubt about that and that’s the whole team’s target.”
