Despite financial problems, key departures and fan protests which plagued Bloemfontein Celtic in 2018-19, they rallied together and qualified for the MTN8. A noble effort without doubt, but one which will need to be repeated this season.

Celtic started last season superbly well with the likes of Lorenzo Gordinho, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Alfred Ndengane starring. They were, however, unable to keep up with the pace at the top end of the table. Coach Steve Komphela resigned midway through the season, citing perceived maladministration as a reason for his decision.

Phunya Sele Sele head into the new campaign with embattled Max Tshabalala still their owner and all of the key players from last season out the door. They have, however, been able to bring in Harris Tchilimbou. The Congolese attacking midfielder was a shrewd acquisition from Free State Stars.

Motsoeneng Gopane, Lehlohonolo Seema and John Maduka will serve-as co-coaches for Celtic this season with Ndumiso Mabena, Wandisile Letlabika and Lucky Baloyi sharing the captaincy.

Bloemfontein Celtic history

Known today for their vocal supporters, Bloemfontein Celtic have a long history having been founded in 1969 as Mangaung United.

Co-founders Norman Mathobisa and Victor Mahatane were forced to sell the club to Petrus “Whitehead” Molemela early in the 1980s due to financial challenges. Molemela sold his shares to former Celtic player Demetri “Jimmy” Augousti following their relegation in 2001. Nevertheless, Phunya Sele Sele still play their home games at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.

Celtic bounced back to the top flight after winning the National first division in 2003-04. They have since re-established themselves as a significant Premiership force. Phunya Sele Sele lifted the 2005 SAA Super 8 as well as the 2007 Telkom Charity Cup and 2012 Telkom Knockout.

Bloem Celtic made the final of the Telkom Knockout as recently as 2017 but lost 1-0 to Bidvest Wits on that occasion.
