Baroka FC stunned the South African football community when they won the 2018 Telkom Knockout, beating Orlando Pirates in the final. However, their league form in 2018-19 left a lot to be desired and Bakgaga have had a busy off-season.

Baroka have signed Gerald Phiri Junior and also brought in plenty of players from Mozambique and the National First Division. It is a gamble, as there is not much Absa Premiership experience between their new signings.

However, coach Wedson Nyirenda needs to foster a winning culture in a team so often accused by him of lacking professionalism. He appears to have done what he felt needed to be done.

They may not always play the most attractive football in the Absa Premiership, but Baroka FC are a special outfit to watch on their day.

Baroka FC history

Baroka FC was founded in 2007 and the club rose to prominence in 2011 during their spectacular run to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals. Bakgaga beat Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows along the way.

Baroka earned promotion to the Premiership with their 2015-16 National First Division title win. Arguably the most famous moment in the club’s history came in 2017 against Orlando Pirates as then goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke scored a spectacular overhead kick. This saw the ‘keeper make the final three for FIFA’s Puskas Award.

However, Masuluke was also involved in one of Baroka’s darkest moments as he, along with captain Olaleng Shaku and coach Kgoloko Thobejane, was kicked out of the club for drinking on the team bus.

Wedson Nyirenda took over as head coach following the end of a turbulent 2017-18 campaign. The former Kaizer Chiefs striker has attempted to improve Baroka’s sense of professionalism.

While he was only able to lead them to 14th in the Absa Premiership, the Telkom Knockout win was the first time Baroka lifted a major trophy and a special moment for all involved.
