Advantage Orlando Pirates NOT Kaizer Chiefs in race to sign Cavin Johnson?

Orlando Pirates have seemingly overtaken bitter Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the race to sign Cavin Johnson.

According to Soccer Laduma, Johnson is a free agent after parting ways with Egyptian giants Al Ahly where he served as an assistant to head coach Pitso Mosimane for just under a year.

By officially opening talks with Cavin Johnson, the Buccaneers have got the jump on Kaizer Chiefs in their pursuit of the 62-year-old’s signature.

Amakhosi had expressed interest in Johnson while he was still in North Africa, but that intrigue has since cooled following their appointment of former Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki.

With Kaizer Chiefs seemingly out of the picture for Johnson, it’s cleared the path for Orlando Pirates to land their man.

Johnson has previously coached no fewer than four clubs in Mzansi, namely Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards.

At this stage it’s unclear whether Orlando Pirates want Johnson to take over as head coach or act as an advisor to current co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids.

Orlando Pirates have made a decent start to the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season and after five matches they find themselves in fifth position in the standings with eight points thanks to two wins, two draws and a single defeat.

They will next be in action away to Cape Town City FC on Saturday, 2 October at 17:30.
