WOW: This Chiefs record will never be broken

Kaizer Chiefs fans still digesting 2022-23

Amakhosi faithful won’t need much reminding that their beloved football club finished 5th in the PSL and failed to win silverware once again. Now, they’ll need to come to terms with a few high-profile exits. A few of them have been in the post for some time but that doesn’t necessarily make the reality any easier to swallow.

TRANSFERS: Chiefs should pursue this wildly talented playmaker

Eric Tower Mathoho leaving Naturena

Eric Mathoho was a key pillar in Amakhosi’s glorious DStv Premiership and MTN8 double in 2014/15, making 25 PSL appearances in that campaign. Overall, the big man notched 26 goals in 259 appearances in the famous black and gold jersey. That’s quite a tally for a central defender, with those strikes coming once every 10 games on average. Sergio Ramos would be proud. Game time was hard to come by this season, however. After almost 11 years at the club, it’s time to say goodbye and it’s definitely a sad moment because he’s unanimously loved by the fans.

Khune’s future far from certain

Club captain Itumeleng Khune wasn’t the first-choice between the sticks this season, which must have been a strange feeling for a guy with his experience, quality and personality. There’s no doubting his status within Naturena, a true one-club man. Known for his legendarily accurate distribution, this man’s skills will be difficult to replace. It does seem as though the board are aggressively pursuing targets in that department, with Melusi Buthelezi and Salim Magoola linked.

Naturena is going to be a very different place without Khune and Mathoho.
