The Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Wednesday announced the match details for the MTN 8 semifinals.

The MTN 8 semifinals, played over two legs, will include a Tshwane derby.

The intriguing last four

The teams that have won through to the last four are Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, Highlands Park and Polokwane City.

One of the semifinals is a battle of South African football’s heavyweights, the other a shootout between underdogs.

Polokwane will host Highlands Park in the first semifinal on 31 August at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. The next day (1 September) will see SuperSport facing Sundowns at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. Both matches will kick-off at 15h00.

The second legs are scheduled for 17 and 18 September. First up will be Highlands v Polokwane at Makhulong Stadium followed by Sundowns hosting SuperSport, also at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. Both games will kick-off at 19h30.

Sundowns and Supersport have both looked to be in great early season form and won their quarter-finals well. Downs beat Bloem Celtic 3-1 while Supersport made easy work of a tough assignment to over Bidvest Wits 3-0 away from home.

Polokwane City have made a solid start to their season as the Limpopo club seeks to earn a regular place among the top sides in South African football. Polokwane City are an ambitious club and the MTN 8 trophy is something they believe they can attain.

Highlands Park have made a solid start to their season boosted by their quarter-final win over Pirates. Highlands lost 3-2 to Kaizer Chiefs on the opening day of the season before grabbing a last gasp point against Maritzburg United. Their first win of the campaign came in the MTN 8. Highlands have shown themselves to be a side willing to throw everything at the opposition.

The MTN 8  is one of the longest-standing knockout cup competitions in South Africa, first being contested in 1972. The winners of the tournament receive a prize of R8-million.
