Pitso Mosimane scoops prestigious Egyptian award

Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has been named the Best Manager in Egypt at the annual Sports Critics Association ceremony.

Mosimane was acknowledged by both the media and journalists for his work since joining Al Ahly from Mamelodi Sundowns in October 2020, according to the Kickoff website.

The 56-year-old South African tactician led the the Egyptian giants to a historic treble and then went on to secure third-place at the FIFA Club World Cup.

This season Pitso Mosimane has overseen Al Ahly’s progress into the quarter-finals of Africa’s elite club competition where they could face his former club Mamelodi Sundowns, Esperance de Tunis or Wydad Athletic Club in what promises to be a serious test of their CAF Champions League title.

Speaking at the prestigious event where he was honoured alongside Al Ahly playmaker Mohamed Magdy Afsha, Mosimane expressed his delight at the recognition.

“I’m very grateful to have been awarded the Best Manager award, and I thank everyone who voted for me,” Pitso Mosimane said.

“I accept it on behalf of the players, the coaching staff, the board of directors and the fans. I feel here as if I’m at home in Egypt. I feel welcomed and warm, and I have a great responsibility with a big team.”

Al Ahly are currently fourth in the Egyptian Premier League with 27 points after 11 matches.

Due to their CAF Champions League commitments are they playing catch-up in the league and despite trailing log leaders Zamalek by six points, they have played three fewer matches.

Al Ahly’s next match is in the Round of 32 of the Egypt Cup where they will host Al Nasr on Wednesday, 14 April at 21:30 SA time.

Their next league match will be a week later on Wednesday, 21 April at home against Al Smouha, also at 21:30 SA time.
