Mosimane, who dropped something of a bombshell when he signed for the team currently playing in the second tier of football in Saudi Arabia, has his work cut out for him to gain promotion. However, he has certainly made an encouraging start to his tenure.

After achieving one draw, Al-Ahli were recently in action at home against winless-17th placed side Najran and required a second half surge to achieve a hard-fought victory, while they followed that up with a 1-0 triumph against Al Riyadh 2-0 on Sunday.

Commenting on the latest victory, Mosimane said the team was “slowly progressing”, with Al-Ahli now having moved up to third place on the standings, just a point behind Al Faisaly, although the log leaders have a game in hand.

Before leaving South Africa, the popular coach admitted that taking this offer with a second-division team was a bit of a risk, but Mosimane reiterated that he was excited to continue trying to “break barriers” and get out of his “comfort zone”.

Interestingly, Mosimane has also revealed why it would be virtually impossible to bring any South African players with him to Al-Ahli Saudi FC due to the market value the clubs price on certain players, which sometimes surpassed R30 million.

“If there is an opportunity in the next window… and maybe in the future… we can always look around and see what we can bring. It’s always good to bring South African players into those spaces but it’s very difficult to bring South African players to the Middle East. It’s not an easy thing. They need to adapt, their social life will be different

“The South African market is not an easy one. The teams expect a lot of money. That’s the challenge. The transfers are big here, people expect R30 million, R40 million and players don’t move. Clubs (in South Africa) ask for money they deserve and you can’t argue with that.”
