Percy Tau scores as Al Ahly win five-goal thriller!

Al Ahly handed Ghazl El-Mahalla their first defeat of the Egyptian Premier League season thanks in part to a cracking solo goal by Percy Tau.

Al Ahly handed Ghazl El-Mahalla their first defeat of the 2021/22 Egyptian Premier League season thanks in part to a cracking solo goal by South Africa’s Percy Tau.

It took Al Ahly only 10 minutes to break the deadlock.

The Ghazl El-Mahalla defence failed to clear the ball from the penalty area and Mohamed Magdy Afsha was on hand to smash it home.

That was the only goal of the first half.

Shortly after the restart (in the 49th minute), Afsha found Percy Tau on the edge of the penalty box and the Bafana Bafana star expertly dribbled past two El-Mahalla defenders and placed the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0.

Then in the 57th minute, El-Mahalla right-back Yehia Hamed received the ball on the right-wing and crossed it into the penalty area where it found Abdel Kader Yehia inside the six-yard box who controlled it and placed it between Mohamed El Shenawy’s legs to halve the deficit.

Then drama unfolded!

In the 94th minute El-Mahalla were awarded a corner.

While the cross didn’t find any of its intended recipients, it found its way into the back of the net after hitting Al Ahly defender Akram Tawfik whose own goal tied the match at 2-2.

As El-Mahalla looked happy to settle for a valuable point against the league leaders when Al Ahly were awarded a free-kick in the 98th minute.

Ali Maaloul stepped up to take it and his shot took a wicked deflection off the wall, making it unstoppable for El-Mahalla goalkeeper Amr Shaaban.

The piece of good fortune handed Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly their fifth win out of as many matches this season.

Al Ahly sit on top of the standings with a ‘perfect’ 15 points, two ahead of their closest rivals Pyramids FC who beat bottom side El Sharkia Lel Dokhan 3-0 earlier in the day.

Al Ahly will next be in league action when they host 10th-placed Smouha on Thursday, 25 November at 16:00 SA time.
