Bafana star Percy Tau is one of the many sportspeople around the world who have had to resort to alternative methods of training to stay fit. This is as the COVID-19 pandemic has confined over half the planets populations inside their homes.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns talisman is currently in Belgium, a country under lockdown until 3 May after recording over 15 000 coronavirus cases.

Percy Tau keeping fit under lockdown

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Tau says he has been able to keep fit from the comfort of his own home, thanks to some assistance from Club Brugge, where he spent the season on loan from English outfit Brighton and Hove Albion.

“I have adapted my training… The club has given each member of the team gym equipment to use at home. So I am keeping fit, however there’s nothing that beats being on the field,” he told his technical sponsor Puma, as quoted by Soccer Laduma. “Moving from group to individual training requires a lot of self-discipline. So far, I am on the right track. “We keep in touch with the club’s nutritionists daily, their advice on the type and preparation of the food has been invaluable. “Then we also have a mandatory check-up with the coaching staff to advise of training needs. My manager has been amazing, she keeps me in touch on all other matters pertaining to my career.”

Returning home a champion

Tau could be in line for his first title at a top-flight club in Europe, after Brugge found themselves in pole position in the Belgian Pro League before the pandemic outbreak halted leagues across the world.

The club has been awarded the league title with the season brought to a premature end.

There is uncertainty over where he will be plying his trade in the upcoming season, as he is set to return to Brighton when the lockdown is over.

Tau has encouraged all to stay positive amid the scary period brought on by the pandemic.

“I have always been a motivated person, despite every challenge I have faced in my life and career,” he said. “So I am extremely motivated right now to come back after this period in better shape and with a good mindset to challenge what this virus will bring us. We all need to have a positive mindset.”
